While many are celebrating dropping temps and the pumpkin spice lattes, all I can think about is winter. Once fall comes, winter is close on its heels. Those of us in the Pacific Northwest know what winter means: COLD. Lots and lots and lots of cold days...cold days require snow boots and jackets and scarves and gloves...times 5....and I am responsible for 4 of the 5. That's 8 feet and 8 hands to keep covered and warm. I am not great at this. Many, many times we have returned home with half-frozen fingers from lost gloves...enough is enough! No more tears, no more yelling. Gloves will be kept.
I sat down and watched a Project Runway and put together 3 strands of mittens. My kids love it when I do this, and this is the first time I have done all 3. Feeling very chuffed {translation: British for proud of myself}, ye woefully unskilled in comparison to real designers.
What You Need:
- Jacket
- gloves
- elastic of your choice {I used FOE}
- needle, thread, scissors
Step 1: Measure Your Elastic
You want a little extra hang on the gloves, but not too much. So, stretch out some elastic against the wing span of the coat and do less than that, so the gloves don't end up dragging against the ground.
Step 2: Sew the gloves on.
I find that folding over the edge of the elastic makes for a neater and stronger edge.
Now, sew on the glove. I sew on the inner, wrist-side of the glove.
Repeat for the other side.
Step 3: Thread the elastic through the sleeves.
Seriously, you're done. Just push the elastic through both sleeves.
p.s. If you find that the gloves hang too low {ahem, just knot the middle of the elastic through the loop that you use to hang the jacket up rather than cutting and starting over.
